A DANGEROUS LOVE

THE BLURB:
The mentalist's most dangerous tool!
"A Dangerous Love" is a book test designed for the working
mentalist.
"A Dangerous Love" is a professionally produced prop
designed to look like a normal romance novel. Better yet, it
incorporates two separate effects within its pages.
Effect One:- The spectator selects any page in the book,
runs his finger down the page and selects a word. The
mentalist then reveals the word. The spectator is holding
the book at the time and the performer can be on the other
side of the room. It looks completely impossible, the
spectator will swear you can read his mind! This effect is a
powerful stand alone effect, or it can be used as part of a
longer routine.
Effect two:- The mentalist flicks through the pages of "A
Dangerous Love" asking a spectator to stop him at any time
and remember a word on the page. A synonym of the word is
then revealed in a startling manner.
Use the same book for two completely different, devastating
pieces of mentalism!
* Looks just like a real novel
* Will withstand a casual inspection by the spectator during
performance
* No writing down of page numbers, in fact, no writing down
of anything!
* No additional props involved
* No accomplices or pre-show work
* No electronics
* Performer does not need to know the page number or perform
any arithmetical calculations
* Performer does not need to touch the book to reveal the
word
Take your Mentalism act to the next level - but be prepared
for the stunned response you will receive from your
audience!

MY COMMENTS:
This is a deliciously clever gimmicked book with two
features. The first is being able to force a synonym of a
specific word. That particular word is revealed in an
extremely memorable way. The second feature is a key
paragraph, located at the bottom of each page. Within these
paragraphs are a handful of long words and these words can
be determined by the use of a progressive anagram.
The first feature ties in with a routine by Christopher
Taylor in his book, Inside Out. It's the last item in the
book ("Phony Liar"). Nick Morton wasn't comfortable with
having letter cards used to form the synonym and instead
worked the idea into the book. If you don't have Inside
Out, you can still force this particular word, but you'll
have to use your own reveal, rather than Christopher
Taylor's ingenious presentation.
The second feature, the progressive anagram, is oddly placed
at the bottom of each page. Most have it in the first few
lines, but this is a minor point. It's easy to justify
having a participant look at the bottom of the page,
especially if you've done the first phase and worked with
the top half of the page. Most importantly, Nick has given
great thought to the construction of the anagram and it
plays very naturally.
The book itself is an oversized book, not a standard
paperback size. The cover is quite plain for a romantic
book, but certainly not unrealistic. The instructions are
printed in the back of the book. I know that when Lee Earle
and Larry Becker did it, folks complained. It doesn't
bother me because no one will open to the last few pages
anyway and no one will have the book long enough to actually
read those pages. In fact, I find it quite convenient to
have the instructions there. The only feature that I could
quickly find that was just a tad bothersome was the barcode
which is blurry and looks a bit unprofessional. But that's
a detail that very few people, if any, will notice. Among
the cornucopia of book tests released recently, this is
definitely one of the more unique and worthwhile ones.
