MY COMMENTS:
The Psychic Entertainers' Association has an annual
convention they call the Meeting of the Minds. In 2005,
they met in Las Vegas and Joe Atmore staged this re-creation
of the 1940s radio show. Joe Atmore does a very credible
job and the guest celebrities include Gerry McCambridge,
Siegfried Fischbacher and Daniel Dunninger, an actual
relative of Dunninger. Since I've never heard a complete
Dunninger radio show and have never seen a video recording
of him (except the brief clips included in this DVD), I
cannot honestly say whether he has re-created Dunninger.
Two things I do know: Joe Atmore is a noted scholar of
Dunninger and has written a book on him. And I did have fun
watching this.
However, it's what's NOT on this DVD that should be noted.
I would've loved to see a sample of the Dunninger scripts
that Joe talks about in the interview. I would've liked to
see included an actual radio broadcast. I would've liked to
see Joe talk more about Dunninger's fascinating history and,
heck, I don't recall anyone even mentioning Joe's book.
In the 20 minute interview with Gerry McCambridge,
no methods are revealed, including methods for the effects
on the re-creation show. I know that's not what this was
about. Still, it would have added something. Joe and Gerry
do talk about how Joe re-created the show and about the fun
they had doing so. And some valuable performing tips are
discussed. And I lost count of the many, many times during
the show and interview that Gerry's winning the Dunninger
Award was mentioned.
The camerawork is fine, though it's a radio recreation, so
it doesn't need to be outstanding. There is an opening
montage that consists of stills of Dunninger and some video
clips. Finally, the price is very fair. The bottom line is
that, despite the disappointing lost opportunities to
explore Dunninger on this DVD, if you're looking for a fun
DVD that re-creates a piece of mentalism's history (total
running time: 60 minutes), this is it.
